Anne Quinane (#382) was born in 1830 in Gortnahalla, Upperchurch, County Tipperary Ireland. Her parents were John Quinane and Mary Fogarty, she was the second eldest daughter of 5 children.

In May 1853, Anne married Matthew Ryan at Liverpool in England and they emigrated to Australia together in 1854(?). They headed to the Ballarat goldfields and Matthew was reimbursed £60 following the Eureka uprising because his tent and other possessions was burnt by the Troopers.

When Anne arrived in Australia, she was already married and her married name would have been Anne Ryan. However, Ryan is a very common Irish surname and because of this, she may have been known as or referred to as Anne or Nancy (Nancy is interchangeable with Anne) Quinane. Nancy Quinane (or Kinnane) was known as "Eureka Nancy" and is credited with assisting in the amputation of Peter Lalor's arm and nursing him after he was injured during the storming of the Eureka Stockade.

After the uprising, Anne and Matthew moved to Learmonth and they ran the Camp Hotel for many years. In Australia, they lived in the Dowling Forrest and Learmonth areas and Matthew's occupation is listed as farmer and publican, while Anne is recorded as a hotel-keeper.

Their children were Anastasia (1855), John (1857), Patrick (1860), Mary Elizabeth (1862), Edmund (1863), Ann (1865) and Matthew John (1867).

Matthew died in 1866 and is buried in the Dowling Forest Cemetery. Following his death, Anne later married Archibald McCauley on 7 November 1871 at Ballarat. Archibald had also been married previously and had two children, John (1865) and Ann (1863). Archibald and Anne had one child, Ellen in 1874.

Archibald died in 1896 and Anne five years later in 1901, they are both buried in the Dowling Forest Cemetery. (Note recorded as Matthew Ryan, Ann Ryan, no record of Archibald McCauley in this record.)

Anne's obituary in the Ballarat Star noted that she was widely known and highly respected, being of a kindly and obliging disposition and scrupulously upright in all her business transactions.
